Ford 8N
Short answer first: find the number stamped on the left side of the engine block, below the head and behind the oil filter, then match it against this table. The 8N was built from July 1947 to 1952, and every year's range is published and agreed by three independent sources.
| Model year | Serial numbers |
|---|---|
| 1947 | 8N1 – 8N37907 |
| 1948 | 8N37908 – 8N141369 |
| 1949 | 8N141370 – 8N245636 |
| 1950 | 8N245637 – 8N343592 |
| 1951 | 8N343593 – 8N442034 |
| 1952 | 8N442035 – 8N524076 |
Serial 8N477937: it sits above 442035 (first of 1952) and below 524076 (the last 8N built), so it is a 1952 — in fact a late one. That is the whole method: your number is the year whose range contains it. Our Ford decoder does the matching and shows the bracket.
Reading the stamp itself: before 1951 the number is bracketed by star marks, from 1951 by diamonds, and Ford's stamps used a letter I for the digit 1. Shallow, uneven digits are normal — each one was a separate hammer blow.
The decoder gives you the year. The kit gives you the rest of the check before money changes hands: serial-verification worksheets, the two-numbers check that catches swapped engines, year-split parts traps, and an inspection checklist for each family.
