Serial number decoder

Ford Tractor Serial Number Checker

Ford stamped the serial by hand into the engine — which is why these numbers come with quirks: a letter I doing duty for the number 1, star marks that turned into diamonds, and a 2N that still says 9N. Pick the model, type the number, get the year and the range it fell in.

Decode your serial number

Pick the brand, pick the model, type the number exactly as stamped. The answer shows the bracket your number fell in and the sources behind it.

The tables, in the open

These are the exact tables the decoder reads from — every one assembled from two independent published sources. Check our work.

Ford 9N

Where the number is: Stamped by hand on the flat pad on the upper left rear corner of the engine block, above the starter. The number starts and ends with a star mark.

Model yearFirst serialLast serial
1939110,275
194010,27646,017
194146,01888,933
194288,93499,046

Ford 9N traps

  • The serial is an ENGINE number, stamped after the engine passed inspection — engines were swapped, so it dates the engine first and the tractor second.
  • Ford stamped a letter I where you expect the number 1, and a lowercase b shape where you expect a 6. Read worn digits with that in mind.
  • A casting date code is NOT the serial number. Castings sat at least 30 days before machining, so a casting date always runs weeks to months ahead of the serial.

Ford 2N

Where the number is: Same place as the 9N: hand-stamped pad on the upper left rear corner of the engine block, above the starter, between two star marks. Note the prefix is still 9N — Ford never changed it for the 2N.

1946198,767258,539
1947258,540306,221

Ford 2N traps

  • A 2N wears a 9N prefix. If someone insists a 9N prefix means a 1939 tractor, the number range says otherwise.
  • The serial dates the engine, not automatically the tractor — check that the casting dates on the block sit a month or more BEFORE the serial's year.
  • Wartime 2Ns left the factory with some painted-over chrome and steel wheels on the earliest stripped version — trim differences do not change the year.

Ford 8N

Where the number is: Hand-stamped on the flat pad on the left side of the engine block, below the head and behind the oil filter. Early tractors have a star at each end of the number; from 1951 the stars became diamonds.

1951343,593442,034
1952442,035524,076

Ford 8N traps

  • The 8N was introduced in July 1947 as the new model — a low 8N number is a 1947 tractor even though the model is named for 1948.
  • Distributor moved from the front of the engine to the side partway through 1950 (around serial 263844) — a front-distributor tractor sold as a 1952 is a red flag.
  • The number dates the engine. A swapped engine makes the tractor read years younger or older; casting dates on block and axle housings are the cross-check.

Ford NAA (Golden Jubilee)

Where the number is: Up to serial 22238: upper left front corner of the engine block. After 22238: left front side of the transmission housing. NAA numbers are padded with zeros — NAA00493 is serial 493.

Model yearFirst serialLast serial
195214,929
19534,93077,474
195477,475128,965

Ford NAA (Golden Jubilee) traps

  • The NAA was built from late 1952 as the 1953 model — the famous Golden Jubilee. A '1952' NAA in the table is a very early Jubilee-year tractor.
  • Leading zeros are part of the stamping. Dropping them makes the number look like an N-series number — it is not.
  • The location moved mid-run, so a blank engine pad on a later NAA is normal: look on the transmission housing.

The casting-date cross-check

Ford casting codes read month-letter, day, year-digit (F262 = June 26 of a year ending in 9). Castings cured at least 30 days before machining, so a real tractor's casting dates sit a month or more BEFORE its serial year. A casting code from a later year than the serial means a swapped or replaced part. How the two-numbers check works.

The $39 Buyer's Check Kit

The decoder gives you the year. The kit gives you the rest of the check before money changes hands: serial-verification worksheets, the two-numbers check that catches swapped engines, year-split parts traps, and an inspection checklist for each family.
